Prof. Thomas Poon, Senior Associate Dean of PitzerCollege, visited Peking University (PKU) on the afternoon of 17th March. Prof. Gao Song, PKU Vice President and Provost, met the guests in the office building, accompanied by Prof. Sun Hua, Chairman of the council of the Yuanpei College, Dr. Jin Dingbing, Vice Director of the Office of Educational Administration, and Mr. Li Hongquan, Deputy Director of the Office of International Relations.
Prof. Thomas Poon was delighted to come to PKU, and he extended thanks for PKU’s strong support for PitzerCollege in China Program. Prof. Thomas Poon said that Pitzer College is a private liberal arts college established in 1963, which is also a member of Claremont Colleges. Pitzer College started this study-abroad program at PKU in 2001. Until now about 200 American students have finished their 15-week program at PKU.
The curriculum includes Chinese Language, Chinese Cultureand Traditional Chinese Medicine and so on. Besides, lectures, study tripsand immersion activities such as a brief home stay with a Chinese family and a home stay with a family in a rural villageare also incorporated in this program. From this autumn on, one student can be selected form Yuanpei College of PKU to study in Pitzer College for one semester with a full scholarship.
Prof. Gao Song said he was glad that friendly cooperation between PKU and Pitzer College has long been conducted, and he strongly supports the new cooperative model between Yuanpei College of PKU and Pitzer College, hoping more extensive cooperation to be established. Prof. Thomas Poon also expressed that further exchanges and communication among students of the two colleges should be carried out.
