Educational Delegation from Ulyanovskaya Region Visits PKU

On the afternoon of December 9th 2014, Uba Ekaterina Vladimirovna, Deputy Governor and Minister of Education and Science of the Ulyanovsk region, Kostishko Boris Mikhaylovich, Rector of Ulyanovsk State University, and Lebedeva Yulia Aleksandrovna, Head of the Department for International Relations Youth Policy and Social Work of Ulyanovsk State University, visited Peking University (PKU). PKU Vice President Li Yansong received the delegation at the west hall of Lin Hu Xuan. Professor Wang Xinyi, Dean of the Department of Russian Language and Literature, Professor Chen Sihong, Vice Dean of the Department, and Dr. Zheng Ruqing, Deputy Director of the Office of International Relations attended the meeting.

Vice President Li Yansong warmly welcomed the delegation and then gave a brief introduction of PKU. He said that PKU has already established cooperation with top Russian universities like Moscow State University and Saint Petersburg State University and is currently developing relations in various fields, which includes student and staff exchanges and joint establishing a graduate school and a Confucius Institute. He expressed PKU’s wish to extend relationship and collaboration with Russian universities in the future as well as receiving more Russian students.

Deputy Governor Vladimirovna then expressed her gratitude for PKU’s hospitality. She said Ulyanovskaya is home to many outstanding people like Vladimir Lenin and Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov, the famous Russian novelist. It now seeks cooperation with potential Chinese partners based on common interests and she emphasized the importance of Chinese-Russian friendship. She then asked President Mikhaylovich to introduce Ulyanovsk State University, hoping that this visit will increase mutual understanding and bring both sides closer.

Ulyanovsk State University, once a regional branch of Moscow State University,  has gone through rapid development and currently has more than 500 fields of study, 13,000 undergraduate students and 4,000 graduate students. President Mikhaylovich proposed that collaborations be discussed between the two institutions, especially in the fields of medical science, laser nanotechnology, aerospace, and energy, which are well-developed fields at Ulyanovsk State University. Vice President Li Yansong mentioned that Peking University’s Health Science Center has nine affiliated hospitals, including the newly opened Peking University International Hospital, and collaboration possibilities may be explored in the future.

After the meeting, the delegation proceeded to the Department of Russian Language and Literature and exchanged ideas with the faculty and students there.
