On the morning of March 13th, 2015, Prof. Lawrence Carin, Vice Provost for Research of Duke University, along with Hui Li, Senior Advisor to Chancellors for Partner and External Relations of Duke Kunshan University visited PKU. They were received by Prof. Gao Song, Vice President of PKU and Prof. Hou Shiming, Deputy Dean of School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science. Both sides engaged in a friendly discussion at Linhuxuan and exchanged their opinions on several issues.

Prof. Carin first complimented the beauty of the PKU campus and spoke of former collaborations between the faculties of PKU and Duke University. Prof. Carin then expressed his hope to hold workshops to bring faculties from both sides together to enhance mutual understanding and provide a platform for further academic collaboration. He also briefed the delegation from PKU on Duke’s academic advantages in terms of specific fields and interdisciplinary programs developments. The aim of the visit was to find an innovative manner to host joint PKU-Duke University dual degree programs.
After Prof. Gao Song extended a warm welcome to the distinguished visitors, he talked about the progress PKU had made in terms of internationalization and conveyed sincere hope for further enhance collaboration with universities overseas. Prof. Gao also briefed the visitors on PKU’s traditional strengths in the humanities and social sciences. Furthermore, Prof. Gao explained how collaboration between PKU and other universities functioned, including dual degree programs in bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate level education. Additionally, Gao Song brought up the examples of current cooperation between PKU and Stanford University to illustrate PKU’s aspiration to foster deeper bonds with English-speaking countries and provide a possible cooperation model for PKU and Duke University.
Towards the end of the discussion, both sides reached an agreement to build a stronger relationship and expressed their interest in discussing further this cooperation.
