Chancellor of Massey University Steve Maharey visits PKU

On September 19, 2016, Steve Maharey, Chancellor of Massey University of New Zealand; Vice Chancellor Paul Spoonley; Dean of the Psychology Department James Liu; and Michael O’ Shaughnessy visited Peking University (PKU).

Lin Jianhua, President of PKU, warmly welcomed the guests from Massey University. Li Yansong, Vice President of PKU; Liu Shusen, Director of PKU New Zealand Center and Cui Zhe, Deputy Director of Division for Exchange Programs, Organization of International Relations of PKU also attended the welcome meeting held in the Moonlight Hall of Yingjie Exchange Center.

Chancellor Maharey expressed his pleasure to work together with PKU to refresh the cooperation between the two universities. Then he and President Lin  discussed how to build a leading university. President Lin talked about the central mission of PKU—to help students be prepared for future, which made educational system reform of PKU a necessity. It would change the former professionalized education system and create a better campus atmosphere with more freedom.   President Lin also sressed that PKU would keep its unique identity shaped by Chinese culture while learning from other cultures around the world. As an initiative of Chinese Mooc Organization, President Lin also proposed to work together with Massey University to add more international courses on PKU’s Mooc platform. Chancellor Maharey expressed his willingness to participate in the project.
 
In the end, Chancellor Maharey and President Lin signed an agreement on further communications and cooperation stepping on the three partnerships between the two universities.
